The year is 1948. The growing popularity of an electric box of tubes and wires that emit moving pictures transmitted over radio waves prompted Terrytoon animator Alex Anderson to approach studio founder and uncle, Paul Terry with the revolutionary idea of animating programs for this exciting new medium. Paul rejected the proposal and Alex left the studio to search for the means to realise his dream. With good friend and affluent real estate agent Jay Ward they set off their proposal to NBC. They loved the idea. But they didn't love the idea of buying it. They slapped their own executive producer and produced the cartoon for syndication release on NBC affiliates. Thus was born televisions first "animated" cartoon show, "Crusader Rabbit". The show in it's original run was 195 4-minute episodes which chronicled 10 different "Crusades" or story arcs. Crusader Rabbit was voiced by Lucille Bliss who would go on to voice the character Smurfette and, more recently, Ms. Bitters of Jhonen Vasquez's "Invader Zim". Jay Ward, moving to LA from San Francisco after the show, went on to produce another show with characters created by Alex Anderson, The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Alex decided not to leave home in Frisco and did not work on the show. Only in more recent years settled out of court for creative credit for the characters he had created for Jay.
Here are the first 7 episodes of the first Crusade "Crusader Rabbit vs. the State of Texas"
